According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), only 14 percent of births in Afghanistan are attended by skilled health workers.
Afghanistan’s fertility rate is the second highest in the world (Niger is the first). And some 121 out of every 1,000 Afghan women aged 15 to 19 years old have given birth to one or more children, according to UNFPA 2005-2010 estimates.
Afghanistan’s population is around 27 million, and its annual population growth rate is 3.9 percent, added UNFPA.
